12th August is celebrated as National Librarian’s Day in India Dr. S R Ranganathan (1892-1972) Ranganathan, born on 9 August 1892, came from a moderate background in British-ruled India. He was born in the small town of Shiyali (now known as Sirkazhi), in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India. Ranganathan began his professional life as a mathematician; he earned B.A. and M.A. degrees in mathematics from Madras Christian College in his home province, and then went on to earn a teaching license. His lifelong goal was to teach mathematics, and he was successively a member of the mathematics faculties at universities in Mangalore, Coimbatore and Madras (all within the span of five years). As a mathematics professor, he published a handful of papers, mostly on the history of mathematics. His career as an educator was somewhat hindered by a handicap of stammering (a difficulty Ranganathan gradually overcame in his professional life). The Government of India awarded Padmashri to Dr. S.R. Ranganathan for valuable contributions to Library Science.

on 78th Anniversary of Quit India Day

The Quit India Movement also known as Bharat Chodo Andolan was launched at the Bombay session of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) after Mahatma Gandhi gave the call of 'Do or Die' on August 8, 1942.  The protest was initiated to demand an end to the British rule in India.  Since the movement was held in August it is also known as August Kranti or August Movement.  The movement was started on August 9, 1942, and since then the day is celebrated as August Kranti Day.

Hiroshima Day

Hiroshima Day

Hiroshima Day is observed annually on 6 August. Hiroshima Day 2020 marks the 75th year of walking the path of the atomic bomb. Hiroshima Day commemorates the remembrance of the bombing attack on Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States during World War II in 1945. The bombings ended the Second World War. The day aims to promote peace politics against the war. Hiroshima day aims to raise awareness about the threat of nuclear weapons and the dangers of nuclear energy.

Japan knows the horror of war and has suffered as no other nation under the cloud of nuclear disaster. Certainly, Japan can stand strong for a world of peace.” ― Martin Luther King Jr. Papers Project

History of Hiroshima Day

On 6th August 1945, the more than 9,000-pound uranium-235 bomb was loaded aboard a modified B-29 bomber dropped the world’s first deployed atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. This happened during World War II, that is, 1939-45. The explosion which was caused due to the bombing wiped out 90% of the city. It immediately killed 70,000 people and tens of thousands later died due to radiation exposure.

After 3-days, on 9 August 2020, a second B-29 dropped another A-bomb on Nagasaki. The second bombing killed an estimated 40,000 people. The then Japan's Emperor Hirohito announced Japan’s unconditional surrender in World War II on 15th August citing the devastating power of a new and most cruel bomb.
